The purpose of this page is to provide some comparison data of different external storage devices.  At this time, there are only a few devices with test data, and the extent of the data is quite limited.  As I acquire various other devices, I will add test results here when possible.  I hope this information is helpful.

I evaluated 2 of each of the devices shown above, doing a fixed data transfer of 1990 files, with a total of 1,197,437,585 bytes of data being copied for each transfer.  I deleted the target files after each copy completed until I had done six measurements for each device, and I averaged those measurements.  For each respective device, the values were surprisingly consistent.  This test was started as a matter of curiosity, after having purchased two new Western Digital 500GB "MyBook" drives and being very disappointed at the slow transfer speed I was observing.  Much to my surprise, the external drives I assembled - the Maxtor ATA/133 drives mounted into USB enclosures - were remarkably faster than any of the others tested.  And a side benefit is that they cost about half the price, too.  I found the DaimondMax 300GB drives on sale for $80 each, and the enclosures were $22 each.  So for just a little more than $200, I got 600GB of very fast external storage.  Update: 02 OCT.06 - I found two Maxtor 6H500R0 500GB ATA/133 drives on sale for $109 each. They are 7200 RPM, and have internal 16MB cache.  I mounted these in USB enclosures, same as previously described.  Test results shown below.

Each test scenario was done using Karen's Replicator.  In my opinion, the Replicator is an excellent utility.
