Welcome to stevethornburg.com November 2008 Sun JDK, JRE 1.6.0 update 10 The Sun Java Platform, Standard Edition 1.6.0_10-b33 is now available. You can download it from http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp If you are not sure what version you are running, go here . . . Test your Java Virtual Machine (JVM) NOTE that if a user checks for JRE update via an older (pre 6.0) JRE Update Manager, it may mistakenly report "Your version is current". Also note that you should go into Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, and UNinstall ALL instances any existing JRE before installing this one. Initially, the Sun site had only the JDK posted, which included the JRE. The Sun site now has the individual JRE available for download - look for the text "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6", about midway down the page. The JRE download is much smaller than the JDK download, so if you don't need/want the entire development kit, download only the JRE. (note that the paragraph above remains from the original 6.x update, now LONG ago - may not be meaningful at this point) Once installed, the user should see something like this when checking version information: (note that the image below is from an older version - not from the current version) Note that when upgrading from 1.5.x to 1.6.0, the "old" Java CPL is removed . . . C:\%SystemRoot%\system32\jpicpl32.cpl and is replaced with "new" Java CPL . . . C:\%SystemRoot%\system32\javacpl.cpl But if a desktop shortcut existed to the 1.5.x version, it does not get removed, hence is left invalid. If so, delete the old shortcut, open control panel and drag the Java CPL to the desktop to create a valid shortcut. The JRE is integral to browsing, so this is an important update. The JRE download "jre-6u2-windows-i586-p.exe", if you don't need/want the JDK, is 13.8 MB. The JDK download "jdk-6u2-windows-i586-p.exe" (which includes the 1.6.0 JRE) is 65.5 MB. IMPORTANT: If any old updates remain installed on the system, then "old" vulnerabilities may still exist. Unfortunately, the 6.0 installer does not remove previous updates. You must do it manually. In the example below, there are 3 components to be removed after installing the new one: J2SE v5 updates 7, 8 and 9 . . . To make sure that the new installation is good, go here . . . Test your Java Virtual Machine (JVM) For further system validation, use the Secunia "Software Inspector", found at Secunia Software Inspector The Secunia tool provides excellent detail, but takes a little longer to do so. It is also potentially confusing, as it checks all executable files, and will report 3 "java.exe" files . . . C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0\jre\bin\java.exe C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0\bin\java.exe C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0\bin\java.exe [END] |
